If you had a shed full of gardening tools at the bottom of your garden that you never use, your garden would be neglected, unloved and you wouldn’t get as much joy from it as you might if you looked after it, tended it a little each day, nurtured it and used the appropriate tools to weed out the natural plants we call weeds that grow in the wrong place. Using the right tools makes life easier both in our work and leisure activities and we usually feel quite excited to use a new tool when we buy one for a special purpose whether it be a steam cleaner, a lawn mower or something more personal. We tend to put our hearts and souls into doing something we enjoy yet we procrastinate over other things.
Our minds could be likened to a garden… if we neglect ourselves things could go a bit wild… we could torment ourselves with irrational thoughts, wild imaginings which if allowed to, might develop into OCDs, beliefs that limit us or anxiety over something that doesn’t actually exist, or simply isn’t true. We could lose control then have to deal with some sort of mental illness. One in four people suffer from some sort of mental problems but it doesn’t have to be that way.
During coaching we’re learning to use many new tools that, when used as part of our daily routine, keep us safe and sane – help us to improve or change things in our life to get it more how we want it. Get rid of the stuff that inhibits us and enjoy life to the full.
Don’t let your problem become bigger than you… it’s probably very small, maybe insignificant in the great scheme of things. Maybe you’ve made it ginormous! Get it back into perspective… shrink that picture down to its rightful size and don’t put things into it that simply aren’t there.
